World Languages
Welcome! The World Languages Department goals are to develop oral proficiency in the modern languages while instilling an awareness and appreciation of the cultures. We offer seven full programs from novice to advanced levels in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. The classical language, Latin, develops reading comprehension, vocabulary building and an understanding of the roots of Western language and culture.
Modern Language Courses at all levels follow the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. For more information, see the ACTFL Standards.
Students must earn at least 3 credits in one foreign language to meet the graduation requirement. It is recommended that students continue in higher level language courses. These upper level courses also satisfy the one-credit fine arts requirement.
There are many opportunities to participate in clubs, competitions, and travel.
