About Choir

"If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music. I get most joy in life out of music."
-Albert Einstein

If you, like Einstein, love music, follow your instincts and don’t let anyone persuade you in another direction.  Our students stay in the music program all four years, earn the TJ diploma and STILL gain admission to the most elite schools in the nation.

Curricular choir is open to all singers regardless of experience. We perform a varied and advanced repertoire including an annual fully-staged musical, operettas, operas, oratorio and contemporary choral masterworks. Students may take choir for a full year or for a semester.

Repertoire
Mozart’s Vespers
Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance
The Secret Garden musical by Norman & Simon
Fauré Cantique de Jean Racine

Fauré Requiem
Verdi’s Otello
Pärt’s Berliner Messe
Rossi Adon Olam and other sacred works

Sondheim's Sweeney Todd
Vaughn Williams Five Mystical Songs

In addition to curricular choir, the choral department supports student run a cappella groups: Manchoir, Madrigals, Sirens, Service Choir and Show Choir.

The TJ Choir Department is under the direction of Molly Khatcheressian. Mrs. Khatcheressian performs frequently in the Washington, DC area as a conductor, pianist and vocalist. She trained at the Kodály Institute of the Liszt Academy in Hungary, the University of Virginia and the University of Central Florida. In addition to the choirs, she also leads the very active AP Music Theory curriculum at TJ. She is the conductor and chorus master of Riverbend Opera, a musicianship teacher for Farifax Choral Society and music associate for St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Alexandria and Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls Church. She previously served as the Director of Education for the Orlando Opera and the choral director for the Virginia Ambassadors of Music. She is currently pursuing a Masters of Choral Conducting from Michigan State University.
